Where Does Tor Browser Store Its Profile?

Tor Browser portable profile.default folder next to the app on Windows, macOS and Linux.

Last updated

Tor Browser is portable by design: the profile lives inside the app folder as profile.default, not in OS app data. Moving the app folder moves the profile with it.

Bookmarks and NoScript settings persist there across launches. The tor state itself resets per session by design; that is the anonymity model working.

Where Tor Browser stores this, by platform

Windows
Tor Browser\Browser\TorBrowser\Data\Browser\profile.default

Relative to wherever you extracted Tor Browser. Back up the profile folder with the browser closed.

macOS
Tor Browser.app/Contents/MacOS/TorBrowser/Data/Browser/profile.default

Inside the app bundle relative path. Exact layout may vary by release; look for profile.default under the app Data tree.

Linux
tor-browser/Browser/TorBrowser/Data/Browser/profile.default

Relative to the extracted folder. Same profile shape as Windows.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sync Tor Browser bookmarks to Firefox?

Export to HTML from the Library window and import elsewhere. Direct profile swaps between Tor and Firefox break fingerprinting protections.

Why did my Tor settings reset?

Safer level and some prefs reset on purpose per launch. Only bookmarks and extensions persist in profile.default.
