Where Are Rainmeter Skins Stored?

Rainmeter keeps downloaded skins in the Documents library and keeps settings plus layouts in AppData on Windows. Those two folders cover almost all backup and editing needs.

Last updated

Rainmeter separates content from settings. Skin folders live under Documents and the active configuration lives under AppData.

Portable installs are the exception. A portable install keeps program, skins, and settings in one folder selected during setup.

Where Rainmeter stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\<username>\Documents\Rainmeter\Skins

<username> is the Windows account name. Each subfolder here is a skin suite. Edit INI files here or add manually downloaded suites in this location.

Windows
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Rainmeter

<username> is the Windows account name. Contains Rainmeter.ini plus the Layouts subfolder. Layouts are stored as subfolders with a Rainmeter.ini snapshot for each saved layout.

Frequently asked questions

Where is Rainmeter.ini?

It is in the Roaming Rainmeter settings folder. That file records loaded skins, positions, and global options.

Can I move the skins folder?

Yes. Set the skin path in Manage, then Rainmeter records the new location. After moving, reload all skins to confirm paths resolved correctly.
