Where Does PlayOnLinux Store Prefixes?

PlayOnLinux wineprefixes, shortcuts and configs on Linux.

Last updated

PlayOnLinux keeps virtual drives, installer scripts, shortcuts and Wine builds in a .PlayOnLinux folder in home, separate from vanilla Wine prefixes. Each app gets its own versioned prefix inside.

Back up virtual drives before Wine-version swaps and script updates. Prefixes pin runtimes that upstream Wine happily breaks.

Where PlayOnLinux stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.PlayOnLinux/wineprefix

Per-app Wine prefixes with dosdevices and drive_c trees. Shortcuts live in ~/.PlayOnLinux/shortcuts with configs nearby. Copy prefixes with apps closed and matching architectures.

Frequently asked questions

Can I copy PlayOnLinux prefixes to a new PC?

Yes by copying the wineprefix tree above plus shortcuts. Reinstall matching Wine builds first or apps fail to launch.

PlayOnLinux or plain Wine prefixes?

Separate trees; PlayOnLinux uses the folder above while vanilla Wine uses ~/.wine. Manage each with its own tools.
