Where Is the Dropbox Folder on Your Computer?

Dropbox sync folder default location on Windows, macOS and Linux, and how to find it when it was moved.

Last updated

Dropbox syncs exactly one local folder. By default it sits in your home directory under the name Dropbox, and everything inside it mirrors the cloud.

The folder is movable, so a missing Dropbox folder usually means a custom location. The desktop app preferences always show the live path.

Where Dropbox stores this, by platform

Windows
%USERPROFILE%\Dropbox

Check Preferences > Sync in the desktop app if this folder is absent; a custom location overrides the default. Selective Sync omissions still live in the cloud.

macOS
~/Dropbox

Same default name under home. Preferences > Sync shows the live path when moved.

Linux
~/Dropbox

Same default. The tray preferences reveal custom locations, including per-account folders.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my Dropbox folder if I moved it?

Click the Dropbox tray icon, then settings (gear or avatar) > Preferences > Sync. The Dropbox folder location field shows the current path and lets you move it.

Can the Dropbox folder live on another drive?

Yes, during install and later in Preferences > Sync. Business accounts may add a second folder with the team name. Moving the folder triggers a full reindex, so let it finish.
