Where Is the qTox Profile File?

qTox Tox profile (.tox) files on Linux, macOS and Windows; the keypair that is the account.

Last updated

qTox stores each identity as a .tox file in the Tox config folder. Keys, contact list and history live inside; there is no username or server.

The profile file is the account. No recovery exists if it is lost, and possession equals ownership, so back it up encrypted.

Where qTox stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/tox

Holds name.tox profile files. Close qTox before copying. Back up encrypted; the file is the full identity.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/Tox

Same role. Use Go to Folder in Finder.

Windows
%APPDATA%\Tox

Same layout. One .tox file per identity.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move my Tox identity?

Copy the .tox profile file with qTox closed. It holds keys, contacts and history. Anyone with the file owns the identity, so transport it securely.
