Where Is the Opera Browser Profile Stored?

Standard Opera stores the profile in a per OS Opera Stable folder. That folder holds history, logins, extensions, and preferences. Opera GX uses a separate folder and is not covered here.

Last updated

Opera is Chromium based, so the profile layout resembles Chrome with Opera specific folder names. The exact path is also shown on the opera about page under Profile.

Back up while Opera is closed. Login Data is encrypted to the OS account, so it may not transfer cleanly to another user or machine.

Where Opera Browser stores this, by platform

Windows
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Opera Software\Opera Stable

<username> is the Windows account name. Contains Preferences, History, Login Data, Bookmarks, and the Extensions folder. Local State sits in this folder as well.

macOS
/Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/com.operasoftware.Opera

<username> is the macOS account name. This is the standard Opera profile location on Mac. Use Go to Folder in Finder if Library is hidden.

Linux
/home/<username>/.config/opera

<username> is the Linux login name. Contains the same Chromium style profile files as the other platforms. The .config folder may be hidden in file managers.

Frequently asked questions

How do I verify my exact Opera path?

Open the about page from the Opera menu. Use the Profile path shown there, since custom installs and channels can change it.

Which files should I back up?

Copy Bookmarks, Preferences, Login Data, History, and the Extensions folder for a basic profile backup. Skip Cache and Service Worker cache folders to save space.
