Where Are Netplan Config Files?
Netplan YAML configs in /etc/netplan with apply and try commands on Ubuntu.
Last updated
Ubuntu configures networks through Netplan YAML files in /etc/netplan, rendered into systemd-networkd or NetworkManager backends. One file per interface keeps server configs readable.
YAML indentation errors fail silently into broken networking. Always use netplan try over SSH so a bad config rolls back instead of locking you out.
Where Linux stores this, by platform
/etc/netplan
Holds .yaml files like 01-netcfg.yaml with ethernets, addresses and routes. Apply with netplan apply and test remotely with netplan try, which reverts after a timeout. Keep permissions root-only since Wi-Fi passwords live inside.
Frequently asked questions
How do I set a static IP with Netplan?
Write addresses, gateway and nameservers into a YAML file in the folder above, then netplan apply. Validate syntax first because one bad indent drops networking.
Netplan versus NetworkManager?
Netplan renders to a backend chosen per file, commonly networkd on servers. Desktop Ubuntu still configures through NetworkManager on top.
