Where Does n8n Store Workflows and Credentials?

n8n user folder with database.sqlite, config and nodes, plus the Docker path and N8N_USER_FOLDER override.

Last updated

Every n8n instance keeps its world in one user folder: the SQLite database with workflows, credentials and executions, plus config and custom nodes. Lose that folder and the automation setup is gone.

Docker mounts it at /home/node/.n8n inside the container. Override the location with N8N_USER_FOLDER when the default does not fit.

Where n8n stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.n8n

Holds database.sqlite, config and the nodes directory for community nodes. Docker setups map a host folder or volume to /home/node/.n8n in the container. Stop n8n before copying database.sqlite. Set N8N_USER_FOLDER to relocate it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I back up n8n?

Copy the whole user folder with n8n stopped, or export workflows and credentials from the UI as a second copy. The database file is the critical piece.

How do I move n8n to another server?

Install the same version, point N8N_USER_FOLDER at your copied folder or volume, and start it. Match the encryption key or credentials will not decrypt.
