Where Does Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 Store Settings and Packages?

MSFS 2024 config, Community folder and package paths on Steam and Store builds, and what lives in the cloud.

Last updated

MSFS 2024 splits its data three ways: config files near your user profile, a Packages folder with the Community add-on directory, and career progress on Microsoft servers. Knowing which is which saves a lot of misdirected backup effort.

Steam and Store builds use different root paths but the same internal layout. The UserCfg.opt file names the active Packages path, which wins over any default you read online.

Where Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024

Steam location for UserCfg.opt and the default Packages\Community tree. Store and Game Pass builds use %LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\Microsoft.Limitless_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache instead. Check the InstalledPackagesPath line in UserCfg.opt for the true Packages location, since custom installs move it. Career and logbook progress is server-side on your Xbox account, so local backups cover settings, control profiles and add-ons only.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the MSFS 2024 Community folder?

Under Packages\Community next to the path in UserCfg.opt: Roaming\Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024\Packages\Community for Steam, or the Limitless package LocalCache\Packages\Community for Store builds. Never create one inside the Steam install folder; the sim ignores it.

How do I back up MSFS 2024 controls and settings?

Copy UserCfg.opt plus the Steam userdata folder for app ID 2537590. Career progress needs no backup because it syncs from your Xbox account.
