Where Is the LibreOffice User Profile?

LibreOffice user profile with registrymodifications.xcu, templates and extensions on every OS.

Last updated

LibreOffice keeps settings, custom toolbars, templates and extensions in a versioned user profile. Most mystery misbehavior (vanished toolbars, bad defaults) lives in registrymodifications.xcu inside it.

Renaming the profile folder resets everything safely. LibreOffice rebuilds defaults on next launch while your old folder waits as backup.

Where LibreOffice stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\LibreOffice\4\user

Version number in the path tracks major releases. Close all LibreOffice windows (including Quickstarter) before renaming.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/LibreOffice/4/user

Same layout. In Finder use Go > Go to Folder. Templates sit in template subfolders under user.

Linux
~/.config/libreoffice/4/user

Same layout. Distro builds and Flatpak may redirect; check Help, About paths if missing.

Frequently asked questions

LibreOffice acts broken after an update. What resets it?

Quit fully, rename the user folder, relaunch. Re add extensions one by one to find the offender.

Where are my custom templates?

Under the template folders inside the user profile. Copy that subtree to migrate templates alone.
