Where Does Krita Store Brushes and Settings?

Krita resources and settings folders on Windows, macOS and Linux: brushes, workspaces and kritarc.

Last updated

Krita splits user data two ways: a resources folder (brushes, patterns, workspaces) and a kritarc settings file. Both live in OS-standard locations.

Brushes are the valuable half. Settings reset freely; lost custom brush packs hurt, so back up the resources folder specifically.

Where Krita stores this, by platform

Windows
%APPDATA%\krita

Holds brushes, patterns and workspaces. The kritarc settings file sits in %LOCALAPPDATA% next to it. Close Krita before copying.

macOS
~/Library/Application Support/krita

Same role. kritarc lives in ~/Library/Preferences. Use Go to Folder in Finder.

Linux
~/.local/share/krita

Resources here; kritarc sits in ~/.config. Same backup logic as other platforms.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move Krita brushes to a new computer?

Copy the krita resources folder and kritarc to the same locations on the new machine with Krita closed. Match major versions; resource formats occasionally change between releases.

How do I reset the Krita interface?

Delete kritarc with Krita closed. Brushes and resources survive; window layout and tool options reset. The file regenerates on next launch.
