Where Are Halo: The Master Chief Collection Saves?

Halo: The Master Chief Collection splits saves by store. Steam uses userdata and the Microsoft Store build uses an Xbox wgs container.

Last updated

The Steam build stores saves under Steam userdata for App 976730. The path includes your Steam ID twice, ending in a Saves folder.

The Microsoft Store build stores saves in LocalAppData under the Chelan package SystemAppData wgs folder. Xbox Live links progress for online features, but the local file layouts differ and manual moves between stores are not supported.

Where Halo: The Master Chief Collection stores this, by platform

Windows
<Steam-folder>\userdata\<user-id>\976730\remote\<user-id>\Saves\

Both <user-id> values are your numeric Steam ID. <Steam-folder> is your Steam install folder. Steam Cloud covers checkpoints and customization. Settings live under AppData LocalLow MCC.

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\Microsoft.Chelan_8wekyb3d8bbwe\SystemAppData\wgs\

This is the Store and Game Pass container. Subfolders use hashed names tied to your Xbox profile. Do not edit files directly. Local settings are shared with Steam under AppData LocalLow MCC Saved Config WindowsNoEditor.

Frequently asked questions

Does progress transfer between Steam and Xbox?

Most progress transfers through Xbox Live when you sign in with the same Microsoft account. Mid mission checkpoints may not carry over. Local file copy between Steam and Store is not supported.

What should I back up on Steam?
