Where Does Chrome Store Your Profile and Bookmarks?
The folder holding your Chrome profile, bookmarks file, extensions and history, useful for manual backups or moving to a new PC.
Last updated
Chrome keeps everything tied to your browsing identity (bookmarks, history, saved passwords, extensions, cookies) inside a "profile" folder, usually named Default. If you use multiple Chrome profiles, each gets its own folder (Profile 1, Profile 2, and so on) inside the same parent directory.
The Bookmarks file itself is plain JSON, so you can technically open and read it in a text editor, though editing it directly isn't recommended while Chrome is running.
Where Google Chrome stores this, by platform
C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default
"User Data" is the parent folder for all profiles; "Default" is the first one. The Bookmarks file sits directly inside it.
~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default
Same structure as Windows, under Chrome's Application Support directory.
~/.config/google-chrome/Default
Chromium (the open-source base) uses ~/.config/chromium instead if you're running that rather than Google Chrome.
Not user-accessible
Chrome's Android profile lives inside the app's sandboxed storage and isn't browsable without root. Use your Google account's sync (Settings > Sync) to move bookmarks between devices instead.
Not user-accessible
Same story as Android: iOS sandboxes app data entirely. Google account sync is the supported way to carry bookmarks across devices.
Frequently asked questions
How do I back up just my bookmarks?
In Chrome, go to Bookmarks > Bookmark Manager > the three-dot menu > Export bookmarks, which saves a portable HTML file you can re-import anywhere.
Can I copy my whole profile to a new computer?
You can copy the profile folder while Chrome is fully closed, but signing into your Google account and letting Chrome Sync handle it is far less error-prone.
