Where Does Box Drive Store Cache and Settings?

Box Drive LocalAppData folder with offline cache, settings and logs on Windows.

Last updated

Box Drive streams cloud files on demand and caches opened content locally, so the cache folder can grow to tens of gigabytes on active machines. Settings and logs sit next to the cache in the LocalAppData tree.

Marking folders offline pins them in the cache permanently. Clearing the cache only drops downloaded copies; the cloud originals stay untouched.

Where Box Drive stores this, by platform

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Box\Box

Holds the file cache plus settings and logs in subfolders. Exact internals vary by release, so confirm on your install. Free space by clearing the cache with Box closed or marking folders online-only. Offline-pinned folders live here too, so back them up before wiping.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Box Drive using so much disk?

Opened and offline-pinned files accumulate in the cache folder above. Switch folders to online-only or clear the cache to reclaim space.

Will clearing Box cache delete cloud files?

No. The cache holds downloaded copies only. Everything authoritative stays in your Box account.
