Baldur's Gate 3 keeps each save as its own folder with an .lsv file, under a PlayerProfiles Public Savegames Story path. A long playthrough can grow to several gigabytes, so this folder is worth knowing.
Saves moved in patch 7 from Documents to Local AppData on Windows. Guides written before that move point to the old spot, which now only holds pre patch 7 leftovers.

Mac never made the AppData move. It still saves under Documents. There is no cloud sync on Mac, so copy this folder for backup.

Check whether Steam Cloud re downloaded to a different profile, and whether antivirus quarantined the launcher or blocked the folder. The Larian support pages list this as a common cause after patches.
How do I back up BG3 saves by hand?
Copy the whole Story folder elsewhere. Each save folder name includes the character and location, so you can also copy single saves back later.
