Where Are Alan Wake 2 Saves Located?

Alan Wake 2 keeps saves and settings under AppData Local in a Remedy folder. A variable user id subfolder holds the slot folders.

Last updated

On Windows, Alan Wake 2 saves are at %LOCALAPPDATA%\Remedy\AlanWake2\<user-id>\. The full form is C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Remedy\AlanWake2\<user-id>\. The <user-id> part is a long alphanumeric string tied to your Epic account.

Inside that folder you will see aw2-savegame-slot-00, aw2-savegame-slot-01 and similar slot folders, plus preferences and achievements folders. The renderer.ini config sits one level up in the AlanWake2 folder.

Where Alan Wake 2 stores this, by platform

Windows
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Remedy\AlanWake2\<user-id>\

Shared pattern for Epic and Steam on Windows. <user-id> varies per account. Launch with -EpicPortal uses Default-Epic-User instead. Disable Epic Cloud or Steam Cloud before manual restore to prevent overwrite. Epic Launcher also keeps a LocalSaveBackup copy under %LOCALAPPDATA%\EpicGamesLauncher\Saved\Saves\.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there a random string folder inside AlanWake2?

That string is your account id container. Each profile gets its own value, so back up the specific subfolder that contains your aw2-savegame-slot folders.

Does Alan Wake 2 support cloud saves?

Yes for Epic Cloud on Epic purchases and Steam Cloud on Steam purchases. If you get a local versus cloud conflict prompt, keep a manual zip backup first because the newer timestamp choice will overwrite the other copy.
