Where Is the Aerc Config File?

Aerc accounts.conf and config files under ~/.config/aerc on Linux.

Last updated

Aerc configures accounts, binds and styles from plain files in its XDG config directory, with accounts.conf holding every mailbox definition. Mail itself stays on IMAP servers or local maildirs you point at.

The whole client is text files, which makes dotfile management trivial. Copy the folder and every account plus keybind moves machines.

Where Aerc stores this, by platform

Linux
~/.config/aerc/accounts.conf

Account definitions with IMAP, SMTP and maildir sources. Sibling files aerc.conf, binds.conf and stylesets hold behavior, keys and themes. Copy the full aerc folder to migrate everything.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add an account in Aerc?

Add a stanza to accounts.conf above with source and outgoing lines, then restart aerc. Templates in the wiki cover Gmail, Outlook and Fastmail.

Where are Aerc keybinds?

In binds.conf next to accounts.conf. Copy it with the folder to keep muscle memory across machines.
